This collection of papers consists of a diary, 1802-1839, recording Porter's personal and religious observations, travel in Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut, and his interest in botany and mineralogy; miscellaneous correspondence, 1806-1844, reflecting the various interests of Porter; miscellaneous essays, 1802-1818; autobiographical notes, 1807, concerning religious belief; poetry, 1808-1825; a medical journal, 1809-1813, concerning Porter's practice in Plainfield; botanical papers, 1826-1829, mostly lectures relating to botany; and a manuscript draft of Porter's Topographical Description and Historical Sketch of Plainfield, in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, 1834. The collection also includes translations, 1821-1839, of reports and addresses of the Protestant Bible Society of Paris; translations, 1823-1846, of French religious tracts; a translation, 1826, of a "Summary Notice concerning Bible Societies in general and those of France in Particular"; a translation, 1827-1838, of a New Testament text by Johann Jakob Griesbach (1745-1812); and two translations, 1829, of Spanish religious tracts. There are also miscellaneous papers, 1802-1841, including epitaphs collected by Porter and translations from the French of: "Instructions and Observations on the Use of the Chlorides of Soda and Lyme," Method of Using the Chlorate of Soda," "Instructions for the Benefit of those who are engaged in Collecting Insects for Cabinets of Natural History," "An Attempt to prove the Existence of the Unicorn," "Report of the Committee appointed to examine the Terrestrial Globe," "The Art of Rearing and Managing Silk Worms," and three papers relating to the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries (Kongelige Nordiske oldskriftselskab, Copenhagen, Denmark).

Porter, Jacob, 1783-1846

Jacob Porter (1783-1846), son of Seth and Mary Cobb Porter, was born in Abington, Mass., and graduated from Yale in 1803. He spent his life in Plainfield, Mass., where he was a physician. However, he devoted primary attention to botany, mineralogy and literature. He married Betsy Mayhew (d. 1813) in 1813 and Sally Reed in 1819.
